MANSFIELD'S Big Wheel in the Market Place opened to the public on Saturday lunchtime - immediately drawing large crowds.
Shoppers and town centre visitors alike were eager to ride the 35m-high structure, which has been gradually erected throughout the past week outside the Old Town Hall.

The tourist attraction offers great views of the town and surrounding area - and was also helping to boost trade on nearby market stalls on Saturday.

Our photographs of its erection, taken throughout the week, and of the launch on Saturday show how the Ferris wheel will dominate the skyline over the town for a month.

The wheel will stay in the Market Place until 8th November and tickets cost £3, £2 for under fives. It will be open until 7pm weekdays, 10pm at weekends.

Paralympic gold medalist Sam Hynd was among a host of VIP guests who enjoyed the first ride on the 144-seat big wheel.

The 17-year-old Kirkby swimmer was joined by Mansfield mayor Tony Egginton, the driving force behind bringing the Bug Wheel to the town, for the five-minute ride.

He said he was confident the attraction would prove a big hit with townsfolk and enjoy the same success as other wheels in Nottingham and London.

"The attractions have been overwhelmingly popular in these cities and I am positive that this will be the same here in Mansfield," he said.

"This offers our residents the rare opportunity to see their district from the sky and for visitors to see from this perspective the many and varied attractions Mansfield has to offer.

"The wheel will be open for four weeks, offering plenty of opportunities for people to have a ride –– and to go home and tell their families and friends!"

Soon had to drop their price when they realised that Mansfield folk would not be daft enough to pay a fiver. mind you I don't think many will be daft enough to pay three quid. let's say a quid and we might be talking.

To be fair I think the original £5 was a misprint not a change of heart by the council. I will be going aboard; more than once

Oh great, another magnet to draw vandals and drunks into the town center and waste the police's time at night. Spend the bloody money replacing all the smashed up phone boxes and closing down all the dive pubs around town, that's a ride worth going on MDC.

Mr Mansfield,

Cheryl M - are you and Johnson A the same person? Its just that you seem to write very similar stuff on here. If your not one and the same maybe you two should get together!

Anyroad as the photo shows, I reckon the wheel looks brilliant. I just wish it could be a permanent landmark like the London Eye. You can see it from all over Mansfield and I can't wait to have a go.

I can't see how a big wheel is going to bring vandals and drunks either - its the pubs that do that.

Agreed Mr Mansfield. Only in our town could people moan and gripe so much about something as good as this. I guess ultimately we'll just have to let people vote with their feet about whether it's a good idea or not. Personally, I think its great and if I can persuade Mr Belgrano to overcome his fear of heights I'll definitely be having a go.

Speak for yourselves MrMansfield and Belgrano Twins not everybody shares your views thankfully. Mansfield Market has become sadly a funfair rather than the traditional market of old where people used to gather that is why when you search the the old intraweb Mansfield is a bit of a laughing stock these days.

At half 1 this after, it looked as though there were problems with the erection.
I hope they'll have it up in time as there will be a lot of disappointment.
Reasons to be cheerful part 2!
