MANSFIELD's Olympic gold medal hero Becky Adlington says being crowned BBC sports personality of the year would be a dream come true.
The record-breaking swimmer shot herself to national stardom after she claimed gold medal glory in the 400m and 800m freestyle in Beijing and is now rated second favourite to lift the coveted crown.

The 19-year old also secured her place in the record books by destroying the 800m field to smash the sport's longest standing world record.

  • An interview with Rebecca Adlington's mother and coach will feature on this week's edition of our Sports Talk audio show, available from tomorrow (Wednedsay). Click here to catch up on last week's episode.

She told Chad "I am really looking forward to going to the event. We all watched the show together as a family last year. I never imagined I would be on the show 12 months later and to be in the running for the title. A lot of the Olympic team will be at the event and it will be great to catch up with everyone. Winning the title would mean everything to me, it would be absolutely amazing."

The former Brunts pupil, who first took to the pool aged four, currently trails formula one world champion Lewis Hamilton in the bookies odds.

But despite Hamilton's fantastic achievements, Becky is hopeful an Olympic star will lift the prestigious title.

"Olympic athletes only get one go at the title every four years and I think that is where the title should go.

"Lewis is brilliant and what he has achieved is awesome. What he did is great for the country and I cannot fault him.

"It is much harder for an Olympic athlete because our sports do not get the same publicity as Formula One and are only in the spotlight once every four years.

"There are so many brilliant people at the events who have all worked very hard to get where they are. It has been a brilliant year for British sports and it is wonderful that we can celebrate all our achievements in this way."

The showpiece BBC programme takes place in Liverpool on 14th December.
