A SUTTON man who nearly died after he was stabbed during a savage gang attack says more must be done to eliminate knife crime.
James Froggatt (27) was set upon by a gang of four men on Byron Street in Mansfield on 10th July 2008 and horrifically punched, kicked and stabbed as he laid defenceless on the floor.

He had confronted the yobs with resident Lee Westwood to challenge them about their anti-social behaviour.

The former Quarrydale School pupil suffered blood loss from a chest cavity and underwent life-saving surgery at King's Mill Hospital.

Stephen Pearce-Price (19), of Tennyson Street, Tony Boyle (41), of Burns Street, 15-year-old Joshua Shaw and Lenford Swift (17) were jailed for a total of nine years for their role in the brutal and unprovoked attack.

Pearce-Price was given six years in a young offenders' institute and Shaw was sentenced to 12 months in a young offenders' institute.

Swift was given eight months in a young offenders' institute and Boyle was jailed for 14 months.

Speaking outside Nottingham Crown Court, Mr Froggatt, who had been visiting his girlfriend when he was attacked, said it was time for knife crime to end.

"I went to help a neighbour, one thing led to another and I was stabbed," he said.

"The street has had its problems but for something like this to happen is really bad.

"I was getting kicked by between two and four people at a time and I am lucky to be alive.

"The week I was stabbed, five other people were stabbed in the country and I am the only one still alive.

"There are too many young gangs with knives all over the country and they need to be stopped –– the police need to be given more powers to put an end to knife crime.

"I was brave and stupid to get involved –– next time I will leave it to the police to deal with.

"I am too scared to be out alone and this attack has left me with many physical injuries."

Mr Froggatt, who works as a transport supervisor for Huthwaite firm Synseal, also paid tribute to the emergency staff at King's Mill Hospital.

"The doctors at King's Mill Hospital did a great job and helped save my life –– I received fantastic care and support all the way through, they did a fantastic job and I cannot thank them enough."

Mr Froggatt and Mr Westwood have now been recommended for a special High Sheriff of Nottingham commendation for their bravely in challenging the yobs.

Stamp it out by bringing back the hangman, one time caught with a knife = 10 years in jail, use that knife on anyone or be caught with one again and you can say bye bye to your neck.

I agree, but dont hype the propaganda. People have been led to believe that every teen with a hood carrys a blade, when this just isn't the case.
Knife crime was a bigger problem in the past, where was the hype back then??

If I had any direct say, too hell with the police. They've proved how much they're intent in handling serious crime. They'd rather worry about kids harrassing trees or wether or not the person selling fairy cakes at an event has a food hygene cetificate than stopping someone carrying a knife.

I'd bring in a curfew for all teens, have the Army doing a propper job of protecting our country, patroling the streets to enforce it and any hoodies out when they should not be get shot. I'd also have the Army stopping gangs head on in the street, at gunpoint of course, to disarm them, and again any knife carriers are shot on the spot.

Something drastic needs to happen, too many innocent people have died at the hands of deluded idiots who think it's the "ghetto". If your prepared to take someone elses life, you should be prepared to lose yours.

Nice area - after the stabbing there was a Police presence to reassure the public - for a couple of days. Now the hoodies (with designer 'chav' dogs on strings) are also wearing masks!

There is a minority of these people that will abuse 'The Hoodie' and it needs the weight of the law to come down hard upon them.

I am not a lover of civil liberties but anyone caught with hoods up when it is not needed should be an arrestable offence. Bang them up for 21 days a time no courts they don't need it. Make it clear. Make all parks and publics places a Hoodie Free Zone.

Once again, and I cannot point this out enough I do not understand why there is not enough CCTV everywhere to track movements. I really do not care who is watching me. I do not plan doing anything wrong and if I do, then I deserve to be caught in the act just as long as that CCTV does not intrude into my home then I do not have any problem whatsoever at all.

I agree, if you hide your face then you don't want people to see it, which usualy means your up to no good. Anyone wearing a mask in public for a non medical reason should be stopped and forced to reveal their face and the mask confiscated. As for CCTV, if your not doing anything illegal it should not bother you should it. It's there to protect us, and where it is in operation you should not be concealing your identity full stop.
