OBNOXIOUS simply isn't the word. Kid Rock has more than his fair share of self confidence, but with this offering he gives a massive dose of maturity.
It seems he's kind of done with mentioning his name in every verse and alot of the sexual domination which the rock 'n' roll lifestyle is perceived to command. It's still there, but not as in your face, so to speak.
No, this album is mature. Think back to Cocky and take Picture or Midnight Train To Memphis. Use them as a basis and enhance them. This my friends is what we have here.
Don't get me wrong as the likes of So Hott and Sugar are still classic Kid Rock with attitude, but he seems to have really grown up. He's always had his fair share of deep and meaningful material which reflect on life and love, while still flicking the Vs at it all. By the same token there's still that base and to the point snear about it all. He's still very much 'I'm me who the hell are you' and it works. If it was any different it wouldn't be Kid Rock.
The feel of the whole offering is soulful, bluesy and deep. There's an Aerosmith edge to some of the tracks, but also a countryness (is that a word?). Since putting the rock element to his work, he's made no secret of his musical roots. He still keeps the hiphop/rap for some tracks, but anyone who say's he not in the rock genre really should get their ears syringed.
Rootsy
Throughout there's that Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, Aerosmith rootsy feel to it all. All Summer Long really is Sweet Home Alabama incarnate. He's not ignored his attitude, though. Sugar puts that to rights with a full on delivery of in your face testosterone-driven male ego. So Hott does the same, but then you get Amen which is quite possibly one of his best songs to date.
Blue Jeans And A Rosary hits the emotional depths, while Half Your Age could be performed by the majority of Nashvilles male population.
On the whole Kid Rock has pulled another one out of the hat. Cocky was, and still is, a brilliant album. Rock N Roll Jesus is a little more subtle, but up there with some of the best things this guy has released.
When talking about buying his back catalogue masters for $40,000 then selling them on for $3m he said "Somehow, I always win." Well on first impressions of this album, he's gone and done it again.
Kid Rock simply, Rocks!
