When Get Cape first hit the music scene back in late 2006 with debut "The Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager", a lot of promise was displayed. Therefore, it would take more than a good follow up to carry on the success.
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, for those who are unfamiliar, is the stage name of Southend singer/songwriter Sam Duckworth, and, at 22, he is without a doubt talented.
The debut was packed with angst, charm and plucky lyrics, with singles like "I-Spy" and "War of the Worlds" symbolising his stripped down approach to society. Now, Duckworth has experimented a lot more than the simple acoustics and electronic drum beats.
Produced by Nitin Sawney, Duckworth has returned with more issues, including gun crime (I Could Build You A Tower), relationships (Moving Forward), exploitation (The Children Are (The Consumers Of) The Future) and empty sex (Better Things).
He can make a simple 3 chord sequence sound fab, and alongside trumpets, drums, keys and strings, the guitar playing is up to scratch. With thought provoking lyrics, Duckworth has wisdom past his years, and he is able to capture imaginations.
Get Cape has a unique blend of styles-indie, rock, electronica and folk, amongst others-and as a result is a able to come up with something unique.
Even the weaker tracks-the very slightly patronising "I Could Build You A Tower" and a duet with Kate Nash in "Better Things", which could have worked if the accents weren't so strong-still stand their ground.
I think that although Get Cape may not be a massive artist, his music will be around for years to come, and I would recommend it to any indie fan out there.
