THIS is possibly the best American Idol also ran to date. In fact lose the "also ran". I can hear you going "ergh, pop crap". Take the blinkers off. Yes it's mainstream but the box has a door. Open it and step outside.
This album hurts. Not physically, but it's an emotional kick to the small of the back, including the run-up. I once said of a couple of Bon Jovi albums that he'd either been hurt so much or he had a very vivid emotional imagination. Whoever is writing the Daughtry material is on the same plane.
It's been a while since an album has appeared which you just know will not leave the deck. Yes there's been ones you know will get a few weeks' airplay. Just enough to wind up the neighbours. This one, however, will either have them singing along or kicking the door down to drop kick the CD player. Personal opinion, of course. I predict eviction at this rate though, given the levels it's being played at - and that takes some doing since I've no landlord.
If your thing is dance, pop, extreme metal, punk, house, hip hop, indie or rasta billy skank (ok, the last one doesn't exist but any excuse to quote Red Dwarf) then don't bother. If, however, you like the idea of a guy who has a Staind/Creed/Seether/Shinedown air to his delivery whilst reminding you of a heavier version of the The Calling with a hint of Nickleback and a tinge of R&B to the voice, then do it.
This album just needs to be embraced and appreciated. Music isn't just about melody. Hear the words. As said this album hurts and I defy anyone to not relate to what's being said lyrically, if not musically. On both counts it's polished better than your gran's old sideboard which should now have shares in Mr Sheen. Production personified.
The bottom line, though, is I really don't care. It's currently on repeat. If I get in the car it'll be on repeat. If I walk anywhere the pod will be on repeat. Basically it's being played and anyone I get the chance to educate then I will.
This has been the easiest review I've ever written because this album is so damn good. A little mainstream and directional, but hey is that really a bad thing?
Play it and appreciate it. Two years ago this guy worked in a call centre. Now he's a hot prospect. Some of the signed crap out there need to worry. There's talent out there vying for your contract.
It's a scary world we live in for the blinkered musical sheep who think they have what it takes. Daughtry actually have it.
